Leather Wrap vs. Rubber: Why Grip Material Changes Feel

Rubber dominates the market for good reason, but a hand-wrapped leather grip still has a real place on certain bags — here's the actual difference.

Rubber and rubber-composite grips make up the overwhelming majority of what ships on new clubs, and for most golfers that's the right call — they're consistent, weather-resistant, and cheap to replace. Leather wraps are a smaller category, but the differences aren't just cosmetic.

Weight and Swingweight Impact

A leather wrap typically weighs more than a comparable rubber grip, which shifts swingweight lighter for the same static weight elsewhere in the club. We account for that during the build, but it's worth knowing going in if you're considering the switch on an existing club.

Feedback Through Impact

Leather transmits vibration differently than rubber — generally described as a firmer, more direct feel at impact, versus the slightly dampened feedback most rubber compounds provide. Some players read that firmer feedback as more informative; others find it harsher on mis-hits.

Neither material is objectively better — it's closer to choosing a firmer or softer mattress than choosing a right or wrong answer.

Weather Considerations

Leather requires more upkeep in wet conditions than rubber does, and can get slick faster if it isn't properly conditioned. For a South Dakota golfer who plays through humid summer afternoons and the occasional rain-soaked round, that's a real practical factor, not just a feel preference.

Who Tends to Prefer Which

In our experience on the bench, players who grew up on wound-steel-shaft-era equipment or who simply prefer a firmer, more traditional feel tend to gravitate toward leather. Most everyone else does fine with a well-chosen rubber or cord option, tested against their actual grip pressure rather than picked by default.

Try Both Before You Decide

We keep leather wrap samples on hand alongside standard rubber and cord options for any fitting session.
